I heard a great quote last week from crime novelist, James Lee Burke who was featured on ABC's Radio National. He has a nice easy going way of talking which makes you feel like you're in America's deep south.
He delivered this poetic and invaluable statement, in response to a question around having a particular book rejected over a hundred times before it was published, without a moment's contemplation. Though I suspect it is a concept which has lived in his thoughts for some years.
"Every artist knows that the gift he has comes from a place outside himself. And the day he claims credit for that gift, or he begins to think in terms of personal pronouns, the gift will be taken from him and given to someone else. I have never seen the exception."
